- Surgery
Preceptor: Terri Hoos, MS, RD
Location: PVAMC 9D
This
rotation exposed me to the surgery side of clinical dietetics. I was
exposed to more high risk patients that had under gone surgery for
anything from cancer to diabetic ulcers, to nissen fundiplication. I was
able to work with the general surgery team to help maintain and improve
patient health. I continued to work on my charting skills, and becoming
better aquainted with VISTA and CPRS.Location: PVAMC 9D
I continued to become more independent by working on my own on patient charts, interviewing patients, and educating patients. Yet at the same time, I took advantage of my preceptor by asking questions and asking to take advantage of every opportunity possible. I attended surgery team meetings and participated in those meetings by offering suggestion for patient care or by making referrals for care.
For this rotation, I also did some literature review. I would be constantly researching topics that I did not understand or that I found interesting. I also did some literature review requested from my preceptor, for nutrition requirements for post-thoracic surgery patients. Although what I found was interesting, there isn't much research on that topic, other then the standard care that is currently provided.
The following attachments are chart note that I wrote during my surgery rotation.
