Community Nutrition Project
- For my Community Nutrition Project, I chose to work on the Healthy Retail Network Initiative (HRN), through the Office of Public Health. I have been working under the guidance of Jennifer Young, MPH, RD and Suzanne Briggs. The objective of the HRN is to bring healthier foods to local corner stores. The HRN is funded by a grant form Kaiser Permanente. One of the goals is to have corner store owners to stock 6 healthy food items, based on a set of guidelines. If the owners stock at least 8 healthy items, then they can receive funds from that grant to help with such things as stocking the items and refrigeration.
- My specific part of the project is looking at food labels, and trying to find a way to teach the store owners and other community partners how to understand those labels so they can apply it to their ordering skills. I have done literature review to gauge the importance of this project, as well as to see what other methods have been used. I have also been able to create a food nutrition label breakdown tool as well as a reference chart for saturated fat and sugar content of items.
