    Preceptor: JordannKearns, RD

Location: Portland State University, Center for Student Health and Counseling

This rotation exposed me to a variety of clients, that I would not otherwise be exposed to at PVAMC. I was able to counsel men and women, from ages   18-50. These clients had a variety of issues that they were being counseled for. Some were returning clients, and others were new. I counseled these clients on topics ranging from weight loss, to weight gain, from disordered eating patterns to meal planning.

During the first week of rotation I shadowed my preceptor through counseling sessions and meetings, and I worked on projects. Two projects that I worked on were writing a short article for a student newsletter and doing research for an article about Bisphenol A (BPA).  For the second week, I was able to lead the counseling session with the supervision of my preceptor. I was able to use her template to write chart notes, using a SOAP note format, for each of the clients that I counseled. After each appointment, we would discuss the appointment, and she would critique my counseling techniques. She would also proofread my chart notes, and helped me to become more familiar with the proper way of charting: short and simple.

My preceptor also created and maintains a website featuring local RDs (www.PortlandRD.com), of which we worked on out of the office on Fridays. This helped me to get familiar with creating a website, but also networking with professionals in my field.
