- Medicine
Preceptor: Annie Behrend, MS, RD
Location: PVAMC 6D
This rotation exposed me to the general medicine team, and to more of what the VA has to offer. I continued to work on my charting skills, and was exposed to more of CPRS, the computer charting system. My preceptor also helped me to better understand VISTA so I could enter and edit patient food preferences, standing food orders, as well as change patient nutrition status.
I was involved daily in general
medicine team meetings, which included interaction with physicians,
nurses, pharmacists and social workers. These meetings were short and to
the point, but we were able to review each patient associated with that
team, and each person in that meeting was included in patient care by
asking questions and making suggestions to improve patient status. I was
also able to be a part of the clinical dietitian team meeting, where
various topics were discussed about continuing education and team member
needs.
This rotation helped me to better
interact with patients and their family members. I became more
comfortable educating patients, as well as talking to them about their
diets and food preferences. I became more comfortable interacting with
other medical team members, and asking those team members for consults
and follow-ups as well as providing recommendations for care. I even had
the chance to call one of the residents to discuss care for a
particular patient. I was recommending a diet order change. Because the
resident was unfamiliar with how to complete the process, I had to talk
her through it over the phone, despite having minimal knowledge of the
process myself.
