- Geriatrics
Preceptor: Susan Holtorf, RD
Location: Vancouver branch of PVAMC, Vancouver, Washington
This rotation exposed me to the older population that is served by dietetics as well as the VA system. The best part of this rotation was the continuity of care that I was able to provide. There were several veterans that I was able to care for during this rotation that I cared for while in my Medicine or surgery rotations at the PVAMC. It made me feel good to be able to follow some of these gentleman and see their health improve as their diets advanced and tube feedings were removed.
I learned in this rotation that chart notes are written a bit differently, as I also need to be looking at and considering different factors in the care of this population. Lab values, quality of care, and quality of life are really taken into consideration.
I felt more like I was a part of the medical team during this rotation. I attended the daily nursing round meeting every morning, as well as taking part in the medical team rounds in the afternoons of TWTH. During my second week in this rotation I was able to present a patient that I had been following since my surgery rotation, at the afternoon rounds.
The following are two chart notes I wrote during this rotation.
