Diabetes
Preceptors: Dawn Barnachea, RD, CDE and Shannon Hughes, RD, LD
Location: PVAMC 5D
This
rotation exposed me to not only diabetes, but to the VA hospital as
well. I was able to learn the ins and outs of the charting system, CPRS,
which is a critical step to success as a dietitian in the hospital
setting. I was able to successfully complete several chart notes in one
day by then end of this two week rotation. I was also exposed, to a
lesser extent, to Vista, which is how the VA keeps records of standing
diet orders, changing nutritional status, and other food related
preferences.
I was exposed to various clients and patients with various degrees of diabetes. The first week I followed my preceptors and observed their interactions with the clients, and their educational style. We visited with both inpatients and outpatients in the clinic. Toward the end of the first week I started to feel more comfortable and was able to see some inpatients on my own. I was able to write the chart notes for these patients as well, with a little help from my preceptors. By the end of the rotation, I was able to visit and counsel multiple clients/patients on my own, and complete chart notes for these people.
I learned a great deal about diabetes, including medications available, pumps, meters, and about counseling on diet modifications. I learned more about carbohydrate counting and how to calculate correction factors. I was also able to create a handout that can be used with clients to explain ways to include healthy affordable meals in their diets.
